During the last week of August I spent a week teaching and playing at California Brazil Camp in their 25th year holding Brazilian music and dance in the Cazadero redwoods of Sonoma County. As usual, I held a morning ensemble class in which I compose one piece of music each day along with the participants. The setting and the atmosphere there are highly inspiring to me, so here are the 5 tunes I composed there. Fell free to download the PDFs and play the music. Let me know your thoughts!

In June 2106 I spent another fantastic week teaching at Jazz Camp West in La Honda, California. As usual, I composed one piece per day during my 9 AM class. The music is composed and learned by the students by ear. I only notate the pieces after the class is over, and now I am posting PDFs for all six compositions for anyone to download and play. Enjoy!

On the first day I composed this march, with very different harmonic colors. It plays well at a medium tempo.

On Day 2 I wrote a samba in 3/4 time, and I notated the entire piano part, with a separate line for a melody instrument (marked as "vibraphone" on the score).

On Tuesday, Day 3 of Camp, this samba-choro came to me unannounced. It has a good groove and can be played on a variety of instruments.

Theme 1 has 2 contrasting parts - a busy A section with a more introspective B section. It can be arranged for band with solos and other ideas.

In my morning classes, I write a new tune each day. This activity is done with an ensemble who plays the music by ear. The score is written out at the end of one hour of musical work.
