In the Groove
Rhythmic connections
In this new online class, I will lead participants into a deep listening journey inside what makes a good groove, or pocket, as musicians call it. It is often hard to describe, because it is created by subtle dynamic rhythmic interactions that take place among musicians in the course of a performance.
We’ll learn how groove can be intuitively perceived and created in a wide variety of genres, from classical to jazz to rock to Brazilian styles. We’ll study the cognitive aspects of groove and hear how it can be learned and applied in playing and listening practice.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced musician or a music aficionado, this class will expand your horizons.
In the Groove will happen live on Zoom in two sessions of 2 hours each on Thursdays January 18 and 25 starting at 6:30PM (Pacific).
All participants will have access to the archived video, audio and chat logs, as well as playlists.
