The Mystery of Samba

Rhythmic Transformation in the 20th century

In these online sessions, we will listen to the gradual transformation of the urban samba from Rio de Janeiro into the national music of Brazil over the course of the 20th century. The changes in the music will be examined in their historical, political and technical contexts. This class is designed for all musicians and lovers of Brazilian music in general. Archival recordings, musical analysis and historical facts will be interwoven with a musical perspective, giving all participants a broad view of the expansion of samba as an important part of Brazilian national identity.

3 sessions of 2 hours each:
Session 1 – 1917 to 1940 - Pelo Telefone, Noel Rosa and more
Session 2 – 1940 to 1960 – Samba-canção, carnaval, samba-exaltação
Session 3 – 1960 to 2000 – Bossa nova, pagode and more
