Tuesdays October 22 and 29 from 6:30 to 8:30PM (Pacific)
Once again, I have the privilege to offer another glimpse into the music and culture of Brazil. Here's an opportunity for us to share the stories about one of the most powerful cultural manifestations of the world.
In these 2 Zoom sessions (4 hours total), we will listen to the gradual transformation of the urban samba from Rio de Janeiro into the national music of Brazil over the course of the 20th century. The changes in the music will be examined in their historical, political and technical
contexts. This class is designed for all musicians and lovers of Brazilian music in general. Archival recordings, musical analysis and
historical facts will be interwoven with a musical perspective, giving all participants a broad view of the expansion of samba as an
important part of Brazilian national identity. If you cannot watch the live sessions, you will have access to the archived recordings of video, audio and chat.
2 sessions of 2 hours each:
Session 1 October 22 – 1917 to 1958 - origins, Noel Rosa, samba-canção, carnaval, samba-exaltação
