In this 6-hour online course, Jovino will share the origins, development and the future of the uplifting music of northeastern Brazil, including all the genres of coco, baião, xaxado, marcha and many others. We will meet the pioneers of the style, the artists who made it famous and the young musicians who are performing it today. As usual, we will place the music in the social, historic and political contexts of the times. This is the music of rural workers from the Brazilian northeast, created out of adversity and inspiring resilience and renewal. Presented with lots of musical examples in an accessible language, aimed at professional musicians and music lovers alike.
