Canto do Rio, by the Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto, featuring special guests,  on Liquid City Records.

The music on the new CD was written following the prestigious jazz composition award that Jovino received from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation , New Works: Creation and Presentation. Only a handful of composers are selected each year for this prize.

The inspiration for the music came from Jovino's hometown, the City of Rio de Janeiro ("River of January", thus named because the Portuguese explorers thought in the 1500s that Guanabara Bay was the mouth of a river). The band explores all the musical influences that gathered in the city through the centuries, including Native Brazilian, African, Portuguese, Arab, Eastern European, etc...The grooves are ancient, but the musical concept and the instrumentation are contemporary, reaching out both backward and forward in time to deliver a powerful and energetic blend of rhythmic fire with lyrical melodies and telepathic interaction among band members, who have been playing with Jovino for almost 10 years.

For his third release on Liquid City as a leader of his Seattle-based ensemble, Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto has created a collection of pieces dedicated to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. Primeval grooves such as the maracatu, batuque, marcha and maxixe are woven with contemporary harmonies and world-class jazz musicianship in exquisite arrangements for electric piano, horns, voice and mandolin, plus electric and acoustic basses, drums and percussion. Featuring Jovino’s award-winning Quinteto with special guest musicians, this recording will please all jazz, world and Brazilian music lovers.

Following the acclaimed CDs Caboclo (1997) and Live in Olympia (2001), Jovino Santos Neto continues to establish his reputation as a brilliant musician and an inspired composer, combining the rhythmic treasures of his native Brazil with a modern jazz sensibility. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in the ensemble, Jovino’s comrades navigate effortlessly through a wide spectrum of grooves and dynamics, showing tight cohesion in tricky meter changes, and shining individually in inspired solos.

Special guests include mandolin virtuoso Mike Marshall, reedman Harvey Wainapel, (who also participated in Live in Olympia), and vocalist Flora McGill, who added beautiful wordless vocals to this project, including the dreamy title track.
