Every year, right around the time of the Northern Summer Solstice, I join about 300 people of all ages, colors, races, and levels of musical abilities for Jazz Camp West. This was my twelfth year being part of the faculty, leading ensembles, giving classes and running jam sessions, while JCW was celebrating its 30-year anniversary.
One of my favorite classes is the Spontaneous Morning Ensemble. It is open to all, and we meet at 9 AM sharp for one hour. During this time I compose one piece of music on the spot, and everyone learns it by ear. At the end of the class I notate the music on paper, and later I prepared scores of all 6 pieces, one for each day. Stylistically the music is very diverse, but all pieces usually have the Brazilian accent that I speak with. This year there was music created in 7/4, simple atonal pieces and some sambas.
Feel free to send your versions of the tunes to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Enjoy the music!
